In South Africa, there are a significant number of areas that are affected by hard water such as the Northern and southern Cape and the Limpopo Basin and others please check your area to see if it is affected.
Limescale Warning for Solar Geysers
Attention: All geysers are susceptible to limescale buildup, which can affect its efficiency and lifespan. (Please note this affects electrical and solar geysers)
What is Limescale? Limescale is a hard, chalky deposit consisting mainly of calcium carbonate, commonly found in areas with hard water.
Effects of Limescale:
- Reduces heat transfer efficiency.
- Increases energy consumption.
- Shortens the lifespan of heating elements.
- Can lead to blockages and reduced water flow.
Preventive Measures:
The most important thing you can do is to check your anode and element for buildup and replace the anode when necessary. Regularly check and clean the solar geyser system by removing and washing the tubes out, which should take +- 4 hours every 3 – 6 months.
Use a filter, water softener or descaling agent as recommended. Some plumbers do offer a maintenance plan at least once a year to ensure a longer lifespan.
Signs of Limescale Buildup:
- Decreased water heating efficiency.
- Unusual noises from the system.
- Reduced water pressure.
Failure to address limescale buildup may result in costly repairs or early system failure. Ensure regular maintenance to keep your solar geyser operating efficiently.
Warranty:
High pressure solar geyser systems being used in high lime scale areas, Hard water areas and/or making use of jojo tanks, rain water or a boreholes water supply are subject to the following requirement to maintain a 2 year Manufacturing warranty:
Where possible rather install a low pressure system as there is no metal to corrode in the tubes
With Preventative Maintenance & Servicing every 3 to 6 months, your solar geyser should last many years to come…
the presence of an anode (supplied with geyser), a water filtration pump/system in place, a Certificate of compliance.
The Manufacturing Warranty on High pressure systems being used in high lime scale areas, Hard water areas and/or JoJo tanks/rain water/borehole water supply with only some or no preventative measures in place will fall away completely.
A compliance certificate for the installation of both the high pressure system and low pressure system is required to maintain a manufacturing warranty, regardless of the duration there of.
